Mevlevi Australia

'Know that it is the waves of Love that turn the wheels of Heaven.

Without Love, nothing in the world would have life.'

Hazreti Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi

The Mevlevi Order of Australia was formed in Melbourne in 1986 by Sheikh Abdul Aziz, a pupil of the late Naqshbandi Sufi Master, Hadrat Grandsheikh Abdullah Sirr Dan al Jamal. Under the guidance of Sheikh Abdullah, Sheikh Abdul Aziz entered the dedicated service of the Mevlevi tradition in 1983 with the permission of the hereditary leader of the Mevlevis Hz. Jelaluddin M. Baqir Chelebi, the 21st generation direct descendant of Hazreti Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, may Allah sanctify his spiritual secret.

In 2017, Sheikh Abdul Aziz received the ijazet (formal document of permisssion) from the current Maqam-i Chelebi, Faruk Hemdem Chelebi, the 22nd generation direct descendant of Hazreti Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, may Allah sanctify his spiritual secret.

Mevlevi Australia’s activities include all aspects of the Sufi path to expanded consciousness, framed within the tradition of the Mevlevi path.

Mevlevi Australia is a non-profit organisation and is funded by regular and voluntary donations as well as entry fees.  It meets for a variety of activities, including the whirling ceremony of Sema, dhikr (remembrance meditation), music, training in the Sema and sohbet (association) with the Sheikh.

Mevlevi Australia offers an open invitation for each person to relate to the Mevlevi tradition and its teaching in a way that provides nourishment in their lives and we take pleasure in the company of those spiritual seekers willing to commit to the Sufi way.

If you would like to know more about the Mevlevi tradition or learn how to whirl in the Sema, Sheikh Abdul Aziz offers instruction in the Mevlevi Sufi path and training in the whirling movement.  Please see our forthcoming activities for more details.
